MRT: Problems All Around

So far the Metro Rail Transit has 3 or more incidents in the span of 2 months, although only one resulting in injuries.

This goes to say that things should be changed. Here are a few things we think should be changed in the Metro Rail Transit operations.

  1. Train upgrades – This is the first and foremost thing to do. Defective trains, old trains and misused trains. Whatever the problem is should be addressed quickly. This is to prevent any more mishaps in the future.
  2. Maintenance – Cause and effect is a universal law. If the trains are maintained it tends to work well.
  3. Alleviate traffic problems in the Metro – A central problem of the Metro Rail Transit is the carrying of passengers more than the allowed capacity of the trains. If the traffic problem is resolved, passengers will be more than willing to take alternative transportation.

Traffic, Traffic Everywhere

Today, February 17, 2014, is said to start the Traffic Armageddon in Manila. This is due to the fact that there will be two major government infrastructure projects to start today.

The two projects are:

  • Building the 14.8 kilometer Metro Manila Skyway 3 project
  • Connecting Ninoy Aquino International Airport Express Phase 2 to the Entertainment City

There will also be smaller projects within the metro like connecting the LRT 1 and MRT in Quezon City, Underpasses in Makati Avenue and Gil Puyat.

The traffic will unfortunately be unresolved until after the elections in June 2016.

Daytime Truck Ban to be Implemented

Under the new ordinance, eight-wheeler trucks with a gross weight of above 4,500 kilograms will be banned from 5 a.m. to 9 p.m on weekdays.

However, this is met by Rodolfo de Ocampo, chairman of the Confederation of Truckers Association of the Philippines and Port Users Confederation president, saying that the ban would be problematic for small and medium enterprises.

Trucks for food deliveries will be exempted, however from the metro-wide ban.

Violating the new rules would immediately cost Php 5000.00 in addition to the truck being impounded.

The MMDA’s New Traffic Control Center

The Metro Manila Development Authority inaugurates its new traffic control center within their Metrobase Building along EDSA.

The new traffic control center has a state of the art, Traffic Signalization System that aims to improve pedestrian and traffic safety. The TSS will be able to manage 85 priority intersections and 25 traffic control and surveillance  locations within Metro Manila.

We believe this is good news. Traffic and safety have been major concerns in the Metro over the past few weeks.

21 Dead after Bus fell off Skyway, And How You Can Prevent Being Involved

News yesterday shocked everyone when a bus fell off Skyway. Don Mariano, the bus transit involved, has a track record of accidents involving its bus. The Metro Manila Development authority is now considering the suspension of the whole Don Mariano fleet. However, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board suspended the franchise of Don Mariano.

This is an unfortunate incident that no one should be involved in. Here are a few tips on avoiding these accidents:

  1. Avoid Buses that you know overspeed – If you take buses always, then you know that a lot of buses overspeed especially in Commonwealth, East Avenue and some parts of EDSA. Avoid them.
  2. Most buses involved are usually ordinary buses. Avoid them.
  3. Use your own vehicle or rent a car – This way, you are more involved in how safe you will be on the road instead of the driver. You cannot of course predict actions of another driver.
  4. Avoid traveling very early in the morning, if you can help it. Most people don’t have the luxury to not travel early in the morning. The reason behind this is that most drivers speed in the early morning when there are no MMDA officials.

Overspeeding has always been an issue especially with buses involved in accidents. The best way to avoid these accidents is that you don’t avoid them entirely. Avoid overspeeding and avoid traveling in accident-prone areas.
